HKCEC welcomed 25 local exhibitions with 1.29 million attendance this summer
(5 October 2021) Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (Management) Limited (“HML”) announced that from 14 July 2021 to 31 August 2021, a total of 25 physical exhibitions were held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (“HKCEC”) with over 1.29 million in attendance. HML attributed the success of the events to effective COVID-19 preventative measures and flexibility of event rescheduling, adding that the attendance figures also reflect the true value of physical exhibitions.
Due to the impact of the third wave of COVID-19 in Hong Kong over the same period in 2020, all recurrent public exhibitions at the HKCEC were either cancelled or postponed, inevitably impacting the city’s exhibition industry. However, the improving COVID-19 situation in Hong Kong and HML’s adherence to strict anti-COVID protocols have led to renewed confidence among organisers in holding physical exhibitions. Exhibitors and visitors have also enjoyed more peace of mind to participate in these events, as evidenced by the more than 1.29 million visitors attending exhibitions over just a six-week period.
Ms Monica Lee-Müller, Managing Director of HML, said, “HML has adopted a series of stringent preventative measures, introduced new technology and maintained close communication with event organisers. We are delighted that HML has been able to ensure the smooth execution of multiple local exhibitions during the summer as a result, bringing forth long-awaited high patronage and positive sentiment. However, reviving the exhibition and convention industry depends not only on reopening local exhibitions, but also, and more importantly, staging international trade fairs and conferences in Hong Kong. To this end, we have actively maintained close liaison with international organisers and made all preparations for the return of various international activities with a view to injecting impetus to the local economy.”
HML and organisers co-operated closely to host the exhibitions despite the pandemic. The 25 exhibitions included 17 local public exhibitions, seven public and trade fairs, and one trade fair. Themes included books, sports and leisure, comics and animation, food, education, household appliances, baby products, wedding products, wine and jewellery. One highlight is the International Immigration and Property Expo, a brand-new exhibition that was hosted at the HKCEC for the first time in March 2021 and again in August 2021.
