The US$180 million expansion of HKCEC is almost complete
and the final touches are now being applied.
An additional 19,400 square metres has been added to our
exhibition space, bringing the total to 83,000 square metres
- and it also means a fresh look and magnificently enhanced
facilities for the Centre. In the coming 12 months a total
of 30 existing exhibitions will occupy a portion or all of
the new space; 10 shows will utilise every inch of exhibition
hall space within HKCEC, including the Hong Kong Electronics
Fair, Hong Kong Jewellery & Gem Fair and the Mega Show
Part I, all in the autumn.
Not only will the expansion satisfy the space demands of
current clients and attract new clients, but the experience
of everyone who visits HKCEC will be more satisfying. Logistics
and amenities will be greatly improved, and this will serve
to ensure that Hong Kong's status as Asia's trade fair capital
will remain intact as the industry grows. Some of the existing
trade fairs held in HKCEC now have the potential to become
the top events in the world in their respective categories
thanks to the additional space.
It's a great move for Hong Kong as a whole - it is estimated
that the cumulative economic benefits for the HKSAR as a result
of the expansion include US$5 billion more in expenditure
and 92,000 more jobs.
Here are a few fun facts and record-breaking feats that underline
the magnitude of this project:
- Construction started at the top, working downwards - a
reversal of traditional techniques
- Heaviest crane in building construction history
- Heaviest load lifted during the project was 4,000 tonnes
- equivalent to 22 Boeing 747s
- Five 109-metre steel trusses were used to span the banks
of the water channel over which the expansion sits; these
trusses weigh between 1,700 tonnes and 2,100 tonnes
- A total of 28,000 tonnes of steel was used
- If placed end-to-end, the bamboo scaffolding used would
reach from Hong Kong to Vancouver, a distance of approximately
10,000 kilometres
- The surface area of exhibition hall 1 covers the equivalent
of two football fields
