On 25
November 2003, fifteen years will have passed since the HKCEC
first opened its doors, and even longer since I first became involved
in offering advice on its design and management. On its opening
in 1988, the original HKCEC transformed Hong Kong's exhibition scene
and set new standards for the design and operation of exhibition
venues, quickly becoming a model for similar enterprises throughout
Asia and beyond. It has been extremely gratifying to witness the
impact that the HKCEC has had on Hong Kong and its exhibition industry
over the past one and a half decades, and to have been part of Hong
Kong's transformation into Asia's trade fair capital. We have come
a long way towards our declared mission "to be the best exhibition
and convention centre in Asia, internationally renowned for excellence,
and hosting the world's greatest events."
In 1997, the
HKCEC expanded to over twice its original size, with the extension
of the stunning building that is now such a dramatic feature of
Hong Kong's harbour profile. But with demand continuing to rise,
further expansion looks necessary, and planning for a second extension
is now underway. To date, the HKCEC has hosted nearly 30,000 events,
utilising more than 111 million sq m. It has seen over 40 million
visitors participate in its exhibitions, conferences, banquets and
concerts. Occupancy now averages over 50% across a full year, and
in peak season is sometimes close to 80%. These are figures that
tell a story of success, a story that is backed up by the regular
global industry performance awards that the Centre continues to
receive.
No one person
or organisation can take credit for this success. Behind it lies
Hong Kong's unique culture and work ethic, and its passion for service
and customer care. At the same time, this city's extraordinary infrastructure
for transacting business has played a major part in our success,
as has its location on the doorstep of a newly energised China.
Personally speaking, I am especially proud also of the HKCEC staff,
who have consistently and tirelessly striven to meet our declared
goal: "To be the best ... renowned for excellence".

CFE
