HKCEC continuing sustainable development efforts

(Hong Kong, 17 November 2010)     With dedication and commitment to continued sustainable development, the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (Management) Ltd (HML) is proud to have received three (3) major awards including Champion in Awards in Energy Saving, Class of Excellence in Awards in Waste Management, and Good Class in Awards in Air Quality.

Compared with the previous year, in the fiscal year ending 30 June 2010, the HKCEC has reduced consumption of electricity by 9.6% (kWh/m2/day), water by 17.3% (m3/m2/day) and office paper by 3.64% (in volume).

18,860 kg of glass bottles, 844 kg of plastic bottles and 116,026 kg of paper have been collected from events and offices for recycling.

Mr Cliff Wallace, Managing Director of HML, is delighted with the results and says, “These are joint efforts from staff members, events organisers, contractors and users of the HKCEC.

“As a socially and environmentally responsible management company, we have a duty to be at the forefront of efforts to ensure a sustainable development path for ourselves and for future generations.  It is a good start and we will continue to invest in facility upgrades and emphasise procedures to enhance current efforts”.

With the simple and effective green concept in mind– Reduce, Re-use, Recycle, HML has set goals in different areas including energy and water saving, and waste management.

A series of measures have been implemented over the last few years in order to achieve these goals.  They included installation of 11,000 energy saving fluorescent tubes, one variable speed drive for a chiller unit, 23 variable frequency drives for escalator, and placement of 50 sets of recycle bins at strategic locations to collect recyclable waste.

With a new mechanical system in place, air exhausted from the HKCEC’s exhibition halls can now be used as an energy source to pre-cool outdoor fresh air in the summer.

Upon completion of the replacement of 843 faucets in toilets with new automatic faucets, water consumption will be greatly reduced by 650 litres per minute.

HML is committed to contributing as a responsible corporate citizen and will continue to look for more sustainable development initiatives in cooperation with the event industry players.
